Tuesday March 18, 6:00 pm at Foster Auditorium (Paterno Library) – Adele Reinhartz is a Jewish scholar of the New Testament and has written extensively on the Jewish context of Jesus, early Christianity, and the New Testament. This talk explores Jesus’s Jewishness, focusing specifically on his observance of Jewish law and practice. We will begin by looking at how the Gospels, our only direct sources for the historical Jesus, portray Jesus as a Jew. Second, we will glance at some of the ways in which Jesus’ Jewishness has been construed in modern scholarship—for better or for worse. We will then move to a more detailed look at two ancient portraits of Jesus: the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of John. Finally, we will reflect on the implications of Jesus’s Jewishness for history, scholarship, and Jewish-Christian relations in our own day.
